Spasticity and Cerebral palsy



Before, during or after birth injury to the motor cortex of the brain is cause spasticity and cerebral palsy. It majorly affects the muscles because it can not only make them stiffy and jerky but also be a hurdle in the movement and even make it impossible.   

During the preschool years, it probably shows its symptoms and signs. In general, it affects the lower limb, the upper limb and speech. 

Types of spasticity and cerebral palsy

Spastic diplegia: causes muscle stiffness

Spastic hemiplegia: cause movement problems, affect one side of the body

Spastic quadriplegia: affects all the four limbs also face and torso.  

It is a developmental movement disorder, it causes various risk factors such as damage to the motor cortex, and damage to the pyramidal tracts.

Symptoms 

Symptoms are different for every child as it depends upon the severity of the child’s brain injury and any co-occurring disorders.

 In general, the most common symptoms are:

Exaggerated movements.

Limited mobility.

Stiff and tight muscles.

Walking on tiptoes.

Crossed knees.

Contractures.


Risk factors for cerebral palsy (CP)

There are certain factors that increase the risk of a child suffering from cerebral palsy like, premature birth, low weight at birth, sometimes a child having a twin or are triplet, and breech birth where the baby’s buttocks or feet come out first, instead of the head.

Treatment

In modern science Botox injections, baclofen infusion, orthopedic surgery and so on treatments are given.

But physiotherapy helps people overage, so it is the best choice to choose in this condition. Is it the best treatment without taking medicines? Because it focuses on the child’s holistic development.
